Breathing Fresh Air into local communities

Making responsible car use a reality

'55% of car users say they would like to reduce their car use'
Scottish Executive Research Findings 202, 2005

Over-dependence on the private car can cause problems for society, making our communities unpleasant, congested, polluted places to live. The 3-year Breathing Fresh Air into Local Communities programme is tackling these problems by offering alternative travel solutions - car clubs and car sharing, alongside other more sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling and public transport. The knock-on effects are reduced car use (up to 70%), taking private cars off the road (at least 6 for every 1 car club car), increased public transport use, walking and cycling. This leads to reduced pollution and healthier lives, which in turn improves neighbourhoods and communities.

The programme so far

Carplus is working with a variety of partners, from local authorities to eco-centres, from property developers to organisations such as Sustrans, Friends of the Earth and the Women's Institute. These partnerships have involved topical seminars and training events, targeted presentations and guidance documents distributed via networks, events and the Carplus website. 'I decided to get rid of my car because I was hardly using it. I use WhizzGo [car club] cars now to visit clients, go to the supermarket and days out in the countryside. I know it saves me a lot of money and I have started to walk places more and use my bicycle.'
Helen, Leeds
